When thinking about enhancing your teeth, it's essential to understand all your options and how they impact your smile. One question our patients often ask about veneers is whether they're permanent. The answer depends on the type of veneer you get. We'll explain what you should know here.

Understanding Porcelain Veneers in Southampton, NY

Porcelain veneers use micro-thin layers of customized ceramic to cover the front surface of your tooth. Since Dr. Rhodes in Southampton has to remove a small amount of tooth enamel to properly fit your veneer and bond it directly to your tooth, it is considered a permanent treatment. That means you'll have to use another porcelain veneer when it needs replacement.

How to Make the Most of Porcelain Veneers

When properly cared for, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer, before needing replacement. The best way to protect your veneers is to brush and floss them daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste and soft-bristled brush.

Also, avoiding biting directly into hard foods like raw apples or carrots will protect your veneers from damage. As always, never use your teeth or veneers as tools to carry anything or open packages.

Understanding Composite Veneers

We can also use composite resin to bond to your teeth and cover imperfections, a procedure known as composite veneers. Since this procedure adds material to your tooth without removing tooth structure, it is not considered permanent.

Composite veneers are quicker to complete, less expensive than porcelain, and a less invasive procedure. However, they don't usually last as long as porcelain.
