What Happens During My Routine Exam and Cleaning?

At Ryan Rhodes DDS, we recommend you visit us twice a year for preventive care. When you visit our dental office for a routine exam and cleaning, here’s what you can expect:

Visual Exam

Your hygienist will perform an exam to look for any evidence of tooth decay, gum issues, or other dental problems.

Tooth Scaling

Your hygienist will then use a special dental tool to remove any plaque and tartar buildup from around your gumline.

Tooth Cleaning

Then, they will professionally clean and polish your teeth using a strong electric toothbrush and special toothpaste.

Expert Flossing

Now that your teeth are clean, they will floss between each tooth to remove any remaining tartar, toothpaste, or residue.

Fluoride Treatment

To protect your teeth from tooth decay until your next visit, your hygienist will apply fluoride varnish to your teeth.

Dental Exam

Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, jaws, and tongue, checking for any concerns that require treatment.

Treatment Plan

If your dentist finds anything that needs further attention, they’ll explain your treatment options and timeline.

The Power of Preventive Dental Care

Scientific studies indicate a strong correlation between oral health and physical well-being. For example, chronic gum infections have been linked to heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, pregnancy complications, and many other conditions. By considering this connection and emphasizing preventive care, we aim to keep your smile in top shape, inside and out.

When you are proactive with your dental visits, you can also avoid unexpected dental emergencies, time away from work, and the need for more complex treatments in the future. At the dental office of Ryan Rhodes, DDS, we’ll work with you to keep your mouth healthy and your life free from disruptions and discomfort.

Thorough Dental Exams in Southampton

Each exam is a comprehensive exploration of your current oral health needs. Do your gums bleed when you brush? Do you experience tooth sensitivity? We'll discuss these concerns and any others you have, perform a detailed visual assessment, and use technology for an in-depth evaluation.

Our intraoral cameras and digital x-rays serve as educational tools that make you part of your examination. With these technologies, you can see what we see, which enhances your understanding and empowers you to make informed treatment decisions.

This state-of-the-art approach leads to the early detection of issues, more precise treatments, and, ultimately, superior outcomes for your smile.

Your Personalized Dental Care Plan

If Dr. Rhodes identifies concerns such as cracked or decayed teeth, he'll work with you to map out a personalized care plan to treat them. Together, you'll explore the most suitable options with transparency and your best interests always at heart.

The Role of Teeth Cleanings

Unfortunately, what happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth. Bacteria from gum infections can travel to other parts of your body, contributing to conditions like heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. Minimizing your risk of gum disease through preventive teeth cleanings benefits your oral health and contributes to overall health and well-being.

Even with diligent brushing and flossing, it's hard to reach every tooth surface. This allows plaque and tartar to build up in hard-to-reach areas, such as between teeth. Our gentle hygienists use specialized instruments to carefully remove these buildups to protect your smile. If we find signs of periodontal disease, we will arrange a care plan to treat it promptly.

Intraoral Cameras

An intraoral camera is an important diagnostic tool in dentistry. This technology provides detailed, real-time images of the inside of your mouth to view your teeth, gums, and other oral structures. Our dentist can quickly detect and diagnose issues and share the images with you so you can see what he sees and better understand your treatment needs.
